As species more of us need to revert back to pre-industrial lifestyles. Ways of living that synchronize with the state of the earth, allowing it to heal itself where and when it's needed, taking from it only to construct things that last.
The form for me was extremely important. I centered the entire design around the flared stance the chair has, as well as the seating position which is low and deep. I started with large chunks of dimensional lumber and removed material using modern power tools, paired with hand techniques such as hand planers and back saws. Once the chair was constructed It was glued then carved. Quickly at first, taking large sections away then stepping back to see the form before continuing. Once the main form was shaped the process slowed down and the senses really became important. After taking some material off you start to smell the wood strongly, which I used as my alert to stop and run my hands over the work area and make sure I was getting the shape I wanted.
I felt like this chair needed to celebrate the beauty of my chosen wood species, highlighting the deep reddish brown color Mahogany has when finished. The result brings on a sort of automotive presence with the subtle curves in certain places and sharper details in others. This was unintentional but welcome as it works beautifully with the grain.
